For generations witnesses have spoke of encounters with a large upright creature throughout the North American Wilderness. Western North Carolina is no different and is rich in folklore whether it’s the Foothills Knobby or the Haywood County Boojum. Join us to learn more about tracking the elusive creature. We will focus on foot/track casting, animal signs, and if we’re lucky maybe we can call in a ……. After taking our Fly Fishing 101 class, it's time to put your skills to the test at the river. For this outing, we will be heading to Dupont State forest to fish the Little River; a great place to learn and grow your confidence in the sport. All fly fishing and wading gear will be provided but participants must have a fishing license to participate. Transportation will be provided. *To maximize time on the water, only participants who have taken our Fly Fishing 101 class can participate. Contact [email protected] with questions

Are you new to indoor rock climbing or someone who wants a refresher on how to belay? This hour long clinic will go over the basics of knot tying, safety checks, and belaying using the PBUS technique. We encourage you to bring someone to climb with, but it is not a requirement. If you bring your child as a climbing partner to the belay clinic, they must be above the age of 6.

Time for you to see our mountain streams from a new perspective. River Snorkeling is a fast growing hobby that allows you to see a whole world just under the surface of the water. *All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. No charge for adults attending who do no wish to get in the water/snorkel but everyone must register in advance to account for limited seating. For those who would like a ride in the van, participants will meet at 70 Gashes Creek Rd, Asheville, NC 28805.

*Each participant will be given a wetsuit, wetsuit socks, snorkels & masks. Life Jackets can be provided by request. Participants should provide shoes that can get wet and securely attach to your feet.

*Van transportation is provided.

*This program is weather dependent and may be rescheduled based on safe water levels in the river.

Come on out to the Montford Climbing Wall for a rock climbing adventure. Harness and helmets available for use. A limited number of staff will be on hand to belay climbers. Participants must attend and pass an AVL Rec climbing course or belay clinic to belay. Any participants who attend a belay clinic the day of open climb receives free entry to open climb on the day of the clinic.

Ages 6 and up, accompanied by an adult.

Looking for an out of the box adventure? Join us for an adults only evening of climbing on the Montford Wall. 1st time climbers welcome. The climbing wall will be lit with black lights, we suggest participants wear white or neon colors.

Have you heard of Fly Fishing and always wanted to learn more about it? There's no getting bored in this challenging yet rewarding type of fishing and in this class you will get all of the information you need to get started. Participants will learn the different methods and techniques, the basic gear needed to get started, how to cast using a fly rod, good places to go in the area, and the rules and regulations of NC.

"To get started Fly Fishing on your own, you need to know how to get your rod ready to catch fish. Rigging is how to set your rod up so that it presents a fly to catch fish. This class will teach you important knots needed to set you up for success on the water. The focus will be on setting up your rod to catch Trout. All gear will be provided.

A chance to get crafty and create wonderful pieces of art using natural materials. Youth must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Jar Garden: It's exactly what it sounds like…a garden in a jar! Get creative with miniature landscaping.

Senior Treks is a low-impact hiking club, offering leisurely-paced hikes for adults 50+. Bring lunch, water, good walking shoes and dress for the weather. Layers are recommended as weather can be unpredictable and change with elevation in WNC. Must be in good physical condition to participate; ability to walk 3+ miles on uneven terrain. Transportation is provided.

Participants must register for each trip individually. Advance registration is required.
Meets at the Outdoor Recreation Facility at 9:30 am. Trips depart at 9:45am. Van Fee: $5/trip. Online registration closes three days prior to the hike date. To provide the best experience, this class may be canceled if it does not meet minimum registration numbers.. Please call 828-767-1576 to inquire about late registration within 72 hours of a hike."

Calling all Nature Nerds. This hike is designed for you because we are hiking for one purpose, learning about the natural world of the Southern Appalachians. Enjoy a short, slow paced hike led by an experienced Naturalist to learn how to identify plants, animal tracks, bird songs, and any other phenomenon we may come across. We will also learn from field guides, apps, and each other.

"Come meet new people and explore Asheville’s Greenways with the Greenway Walking Club. We welcome people of all ages, sizes, and cultural backgrounds. The goal of this club is to connect people while walking your way to better health. Mileage won't be the priority, rather seeing how far we can walk, out and back as a group, in the allotted time. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

This three week beginner class will teach the basics of archery and is open to individuals 9-12 years old. Archers will learn the basics of archery such as range safety and proper shooting using techniques based around the USA Archery Explore Archery program. The class is progressive and skills build each week therefore consistent attendance is important.

An instructor will teach basic kayaking paddle and safety skills. This is a beginner level course that will cover preparation, equipment and strokes for lake paddling. Sit on Top Kayak, PFD and paddle provided. This is a hands on program and takes place entirely outside. Dress for the weather and pack a full change of clothes.
